Sheriff Forbes delivers some unsettling news to Alaric and Elena about the murder weapon used in a recent killing. In Damon and Stefan‘s ongoing mission to kill Klaus, Stefan turns to Bonnie and Abby for help, and Damon seeks out to an old acquaintance to help him put together an elaborate plan. With a plan of his own, Klaus hosts an unusual dinner party, where he reveals another story from his family’s violent history, but a surprise visitor brings the party to an abrupt end. Meanwhile, Caroline’s heart is broken when she is unable to prevent a tragedy.

While in Chicago with Klaus, Stefan runs into a vampire from his past, someone still interested in him after decades. In a flashback to 1920s Chicago, Stefan recalls a troubling chapter in his life. Following a tip, Damon and Elena follow the trail of Stefan and Klaus. Wondering what’s happened to Caroline, Tyler asks Sheriff Forbes for help.

Damon and Stefan are furious when they learn that Elena has gone against their wishes and formed a new alliance in attempt to out-maneuver Klaus. Tension between Damon and Stefan grows as they disagree over how best to protect Elena. Meanwhile, Stefan has his hands full as he tries to protect a confused and frightened Jenna. Flashbacks to 1491 reveal Katherine’s initial meeting of Elijah and Klaus, along with the origin of the moonstone curse. Elena discovers some surprising new information about Klaus’ intentions.

The high school gets ready for a 1960s-themed dance and begins receiving alarming messages from Klaus via an unusual source. Bonnie tries to convince Jeremy that she has enough strength to help Elena, but Jeremy, concerned, goes to Stefan for advice. Caroline convinces talks Matt to take her to the dance. Damon and Alaric attend the dance as chaperons, expecting Klaus to show up, but Klaus is playing a complicated game that keeps them guessing. Eventually, Damon comes up with a new plan that surprises and upsets everyone.
